Public Lecture ‘The Alarmist: Fifty Years Measuring Climate Change’

Public Lecture

About this Event

In this public lecture, Prof. Lowe will talk about his memoir The Alarmist: Fifty Years Measuring Climate Change, which illustrates that the climate emergency has serious consequences for humans, involves complex science, system resilience, political leadership and action that depends on public support as with COVID-19.

Prof. Lowe had a key role in establishing the Baring head clean air monitoring station that since 1972 has been measuring CO2 in the atmosphere and has the longest continuous record of atmospheric CO2 in the Southern Hemisphere.

In 2007, Prof. Lowe was one of several New Zealand scientists who contributed toward the IPCC Fourth Assessment Report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), set up jointly by the World Meteorological Organization and the United Nations Environment Programme, to provide an authoritative international statement of scientific understanding of climate change. As a result of this work, the Nobel Peace Prize 2007 was awarded jointly to the IPCC and Al Gore “for their efforts to build up and disseminate greater knowledge about man-made climate change, and to lay the foundations for the measures that are needed to counteract such change.“
