Konstanty Gebert is a Polish journalist with a special interest in covering genocide. We discuss the Rwandan and Nazi genocides – the precursors and the circumstances that enabled especially the Germans to become repentant and therefore a moral leader in Europe by accepting over a million refugees. Now Poland is welcoming huge numbers of refugees from Ukraine, and the psychological dissonance is difficult because the EU was punishing Poland for the undemocratic status of its democracy. He says that only Germany was lucky enough to be defeated by a democratic country, which is why they went through their soul-searching period. But Japan was also defeated by the US so they should have gone through something similar, right? I believe that they did not. Am I right?
